Who are you paying?
The first question is who is being paid and in what capacity. Employees, company directors and construction subcontractors do not automatically follow the same process. Explain the working arrangement as well as the amount being paid.
Employee payroll
Employee payroll involves accurate information about pay, deductions and changes during the pay period. Directors may raise additional questions about the wider remuneration decision. Workplace pension information also needs to be considered alongside payroll records.
Construction payments
For construction payments, CIS creates a separate set of questions about subcontractor verification, payments and returns. Those records still need to connect to the books, but CIS should not be treated as a substitute for deciding employment status.
Records that connect the work
Bring a description of your current arrangements to a consultation. We can discuss the support required and whether it fits our team or needs additional professional input. Keep the records and responsible people clear from the outset.
Your questions, answered.
Is director payroll different from employee payroll?
Director payroll raises some different calculation and remuneration questions, so identify directors separately when discussing the work.
Does CIS apply to all contractors?
No. The activity and working arrangement matter. The CIS route should be checked rather than assumed from a job title.
Can I ask about payroll and bookkeeping together?
Yes. The payment figures should connect to the books, so it is useful to discuss the whole flow of information.
